The Brière marsh, an exceptional landscape

“It was really her: ten thousand hectares of silence and nudity, an immense blue lotus blooming in the middle of the circus of the atmosphere. So said Alphonse de Chateaubriant when he discovered Brière for the first time.
A constantly evolving aquatic environment, the Brière marshes have been passed down to us thanks to the work of generations of Brieons who drew their means of existence and survival there.

This wetland is now listed among the richest in Europe from a biological point of view. Stopover area, wintering site or breeding ground for water birds, the Brière marsh is also a site of great flora richness and which has a wide variety of aquatic species. We can cite: Thorelle (an aquatic plant that is only found in Brière, in the Landes de Gascogne and in Portugal), the Bulrush with many stems, the Weedweed, the Myriophille or even the Utricular. Among the many species of birds, we meet the Corn Rail, the Blue Throat, the Combattant varié (the Brière is the only point in France where it nests), the Black-tailed Godwit, the Moustac Tern, the White Spoonbill ...

The villages of thatched cottages

“Villages of Brière, a few houses on the edge of the road, others remote at the bottom of the plazas, covered with massive thatch, each roof of which rises in the middle, forming like the arch of an eyebrow above the single attic window. »Alphonse de Chateaubriant in his travel diaries« Au pays de Brière ».

The thatched cottage, with its reed fur, constitutes a fundamental component of the Briéron landscape in which it was anchored from the middle of the XNUMXth century. Out of necessity, the Briéron has become a cottage. His work with a very wide gestural repertoire has become an art to the point of rising to the rank of "Brie method". The thatched cottages continue today the tradition and sign of a secular know-how the original architecture of Brière.

La Brière is the region of France where the density of thatched cottages is the highest. The 3000 thatched roofs that punctuate the soil of Brière are all testimonies that save its habitat from trivialization and affirm its true roots.
